Vale Deane Lester
A funeral service for the late Deane Lester was held at 1pm on Friday February 24 at Cranbourne racecourse.
Lester , 54, who died in Alfred Hospital last Thursday, was a long serving VRMA committeeman and revered in the racing world by punters, trainers and jockeys alike for his rare insights and astute judgement.
Cranbourne will provide a fitting scene for Deane’s farewell as it was his home track where he first honed his craft as a track clocker.
Deane joined the VRMA in the mid-1990s and was elected to the committee in 2014. He served as vice-president of the association from 2017 to 2019.
Deane started his media career with the Winning Post newspaper in August 1989, compiling trackwork reports from Cranbourne, obtaining the role a week before his 21st birthday. The trackwork round allowed him to contribute to Sporting Globe, The Sportsman, Herald Sun and 3UZ.
His affiliation with 3UZ/Sport 927/RSN developed after 1996 Kyneton Cup Day when filling in as mounting yard commentator for Roy Higgins. Full time employment soon followed.
Deane will be remembered by many for his countless contributions on RSN as a meticulous form analyst, though his reach extended across multiple racing radio networks across Australia. In recent years he also appeared as a commentator on Channel 7’s racing coverage.
Deane stepped back from the VRMA vice-president position in 2019 owing to health issues which were a constant through his life. He remained on the committee, eager to play a guiding role for the association.
Last month Deane was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer which tragically claimed his life. The VRMA expresses our condolences to Deane’s mother Sandra and his partner Leanne.
Personality of the Year Award
FITTINGLY jockey Craig Williams and trainer Clayton Douglas shared the Personality Of The Year award for 2022. , announced on Tuesday November 29 at the Emerald Hotel.
For it was the win of three year-old Giga Kick, trained by 27 year-old Douglas and ridden by Williams, in Australia’s riches race the $15m Everest that captured the public’s attention.
Douglas was in just his second season as a trainer after a successful career as a jumps jockey including a Grand Annual Steeplechase win on Gold Medals.
For Williams, a previous winner, it was also fitting as it recognised his truly remarkable off the track exploits supporting the people of Ukraine in their war against Russia. a passion he embarked on as a tribute to his Ukranian wife Larysa and her family.
Not only have they arranged financial assistance, Craig and his wife went to Ukraine to experience first hand the atrocities of war and lend their support,
